Biography
Danish medical doctor, civil servant and botanist, sent to the Gold Coast (Ghana, 1799-1803) by the Danish government to investigate useful plants of the colony. In 1807 Copenhagen was bombarded from land and sea by the British, who wanted to prevent Napoleon from acquiring the large Dano-Norwegian fleet for his invasion plans, and Thonning's private herbarium was destroyed during the action.
