Biography
Scottish forester from Edinburgh, trained at the University of Edinburgh (BSc) and at Oxford University. He joined the Malayan Forestry Service (1927) and was later promoted to Forest Botanist at Kepong (Kuala Lumpur), Selangor. He collected in the Malaysian region and also travelled to the Philippines. During the Second World War, after the surrender of Singapore, he escaped to Australia and was subsequently posted by the Colonial Office to the Forestry Department in Nigeria. Calophyllum symingtonianum M.R. Hend. & Wyatt-Sm. Eugenia symingtoniana M.R. Hend. and Shorea symingtonii G.H.S. Wood were all named in his honour.
