Biography
Scottish botanist who trained at St. Andrews and qualified as Doctor of Laws (1875). He was the son Patrick Syme, flower painter, drawing master and correspondent of Charles Darwin. Pursuing a childhood interest in botany, he became Curator of the Botanical Society, Edinburgh (1850). Syme lectured on botany at Charing Cross and Westminster Hospitals. Later in his life he adopted the surname Boswell and was subsequently known as Boswell-Syme. The British material from his herbarium, consisting of some 20,000 specimens, was purchased by F.J. Hanbury and subsequently donated by him to BM (1932). The remainder of his worldwide collections, mostly collected by others, was acquired by J.C. Melvill and is now at MANCH.
