Biography
German farmer and botanist from Templin, Ukermark. He emigrated to South-West Africa (Namibia) in 1929 and farmed at Buellsport in Rehoboth District (1930-1950). An Internee during the Second World War, he was greatly influenced by a number of botanists who were fellow-internees. After selling his farm in 1952 he moved to the Transvaal where he was appointed a technician (1952-1962) in the Botanical Research Institute (PRE) in Pretoria. His extensive compilation of botanical literature and collectors for South West Africa (Namibia) was published in 1961. He transferred to the Natal Herbarium (NH), Durban (1962-1972), but continued to be associated with the herbarium for several years after retirement. While at NH he published a revision of Cussonia (1973) and researched botanical collectors of Natal. Rudolf Strey is commemorated by a number of species including Anthospermum streyi Puff, Crassula streyi Tölken (= Septimia streyi (Tölken) P.V. Heath), Indigofera streyana Merxm., Lapeirousia streyi Suess. and Lithops streyi Schwantes.
