Biography
American botanist from Avalon, Missouri who later studied for his Master's degree at the Agricultural College of New Mexico under the supervision of E.O. Wooten. Standley worked at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington (US) from 1909 and established himself as a field botanist. In 1928 he left for the Field Museum in Chicago (F) where he worked until 1950, then moved to Honduras for an active retirement. Standley specialised in plants of Central America, in particular Costa Rica (1923-1927) and Guatemala (1922-1941) and became one of the most prolific collectors in the world. He received an honorary doctor's degree from the government of Guatemala. Though best known for his publications on phanerogams, Standley also collected cryptogams. Vegter refers to 125 specimens of bryophytes from Costa Rica at K, but these were transferred to BM after 1960 under the terms of the Morton Agreement.
