Biography
American botanist. Laurence Skog is a specialist in the taxonomy and floristics of neotropical Gesneriaceae at the Smithsonian Institution. He was born in Duluth in 1943 and graduated in biology from the University of Minnesota in 1965. He went on to complete a revision of the genus Coriaria for a master's degree at the University of Connecticut in 1968 and a study of the Tribe Gesnerieae, which included a revision of Gesneria, for a PhD from Cornell University in 1972. The following year he joined the staff of the Smithsonian Institution as an associate curator. He advanced to curator (1986), was acting chairman of the department (1987) and chairman (1988-1992) and retired in 2003 with the title of emeritus curator and research scientist. For two years (1985-1987) he also served as director of the Botanical Diversity of the Guiana Shield Program, in which he continues to be involved as an advising director. His fieldwork has taken him to Mexico (1965, 1967, 1983), Chile (1967), Peru (1967, 1978), Ecuador (1967, 1995), Colombia (1967, 1980, 1995), Venezuela (1967), Costa Rica (1967), Puerto Rico (1970, 1978), Dominica (1970), Dominican Republic (1970), Haiti (1970), Jamaica (1970, 1975), India (1975), Panama (1977, 1980), New Zealand (1981), Australia (1981), Guyana (1985, 1992), French Guiana (1985, 1986, 1988, 2003), Brazil (1992), China (1992, 1994), Honduras (1996), Suriname (1999). Camellia skogii C.X. Ye and Chirita skogii Z. Yu Li are his botanical eponyms.
