Biography
Victor Schiffner was an Austrian bryologist who served as Professor at the University of Prague and the University of Vienna. He amassed a personal herbarium of 50,000 hepatics and mosses, which was acquired by Harvard University in 1931.
Schiffner was born in Böhmisch Leipa (Česká Lípa), north of Prague, which at the time was part of the Austrian empire. After studies at the University of Prague, he was appointed lecturer and assistant in the botanic gardens.
Schiffner spent 1893-1894 in Java and Sumatra, based at the Buitenzorg herbarium. He made extensive collections of hepatics, which he enumerated in Hepaticum Archipelagi Indici (1898-1900). The collections were also published in the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien. Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Klasse. Denkschriften (1898-1900) and in Annales Bryologique (1929).
After his return to Europe in 1895, Schiffner was appointed Professor of Botany at Prague, where he remained until 1902. In 1901 he took part in a government sponsored expedition to southern Brazil, where he collected more bryophytes. After his return to Europe, he was appointed professor at the University of Vienna, remaining there until his retirement in 1932. He concentrated on the European flora in his latter career, publishing works such as (1915) on Adriatic Sea algae and the series Kritische Bemerkungen über die europäischen Lebermoose.
Among Schiffner's other works was the Hepaticae section of Engler and Prantl's Die Natürliche Pflanzenfamilien. An unfinished manuscript on the liverworts of Brazil was completed by Sigrid Arnell and published in 1964. He died in Baden, Austria, in 1944.
