Biography
British botanist who studied at Oxford University and took part in the university exploring club's expedition to British Guiana (1929). The expedition included the entomologist O.W. Richards who pioneered the field of quantitative, mass-collecting of tropical canopy invertebrates by hoisting light traps up into the trees in 1929; the two collected together again in British Guiana in 1937. Sandwith also collected in the West Indies, North Africa and Europe, particularly in Albania which had previously been very little collected by western botanists. He was an authority on Bignoniaceae and his British collections specialised in the study of adventive plants. Sandwith's original collections were bequeathed to K, with the exception of most British material which was donated to BRIST or L.
