Biography
English clergyman from Helston, Cornwall who became Vice-Principal of the Theological College in Capetown, South Africa (1860-). He subsequently returned to England where he became Curate of Trusham, Devon (1876-) and later Vicar of Bridgerule (1882-1885). A keen botanist, he studied the apomictic genus Rubus and wrote a landmark publication on the genus. Rubus rogersii E.F. Linton was named in his honour. W.M. Rogers married Alicia Chadwick and had a daughter Mary, who may have been responsible for Rubus material collected later at BM. His sons C.G. Rogers and F.A. Rogers also collected botanical specimens represented at the Museum. The herbarium of W.M. Moyle is in part at BM and consists of phanerogams and pteridophytes from the United Kingdom. All of his original specimens of Rubus are at BM, including many types, and material from South Africa. Following a passing fashion amongst British botanists in the late 19th Century, his specimens often bear just the initials 'W.M.R.' Some of the British material may have been transferred from K to BM (c. 1961) under the terms of the Morton Agreement.
