Biography
Esprit Requien was a French naturalist from Avignon, where the natural history museum bears his name.
Developing an early passion for botany, Requien made significant collections of plants in Corsica and in the area of Mont Ventoux, south-east France. He was also interested in conchology and palaeontology, and made collecting expeditions to the Pyrenees, Catalonia and Italy.
Requien published little but was a correspondent of important botanists such as A.-P. de Candolle and Louis Agassiz. Having been involved with the natural history museum (Musée Calvet) in Avignon from 1819, he was appointed its director in 1849. Following his death in Corsica two years later, his collections were bequeathed to the museum, which was renamed Musée Requien.
