Biography
German pharmacist from Treuenbrietzen (Mark Brandenburg) who studied in Berlin and practised in Luckau (1831-1840). Gottlob Rabenhorst was later a cryptogamist who specialised in diatoms and lichens and was a prolific editor of exsiccatae. His original collections were deposited at B but largely destroyed during the Second World War. In addition to collecting specimens he edited, prepared, determined and distributed material of a great many contemporary cryptogamists. Fungal material at BM was acquired with the herbarium of mycologist C.E. Broome in 1886, but this was transferred to K (c. 1961) under the terms of the Morton Agreement. Many thousands of algal, lichen, bryophyte and pteridophyte specimens from his exsiccatae are at BM and include material transferred reciprocally from K under the Morton Agreement.
