Biography
American botanist. Donald John Pinkava is professor emeritus at Arizona State University (ASU). Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he came to ASU as an assistant professor in 1964 from Ohio State University, where he completed his PhD on the biosystematics of Berglandiera. He continues to work on the Asteraceae, particularly the genus Hymenothrix, and has since become a specialist in cacti and succulents. He is best known for his research on interspecific hybridization in opuntioids from the American Southwest and northern and central Mexico. He has prepared treatments of Opuntia for the Chihuahua Desert Region, Flora of North America, and Flora of Mexico as well as floristic studies of the Cuatro Ciénegas Region of Coahuila. He is also a co-editor of the Manual of the Vascular Plants of Arizona, and serves as leader of the Arizona Recovery Team in the Threatened and Endangered Species Program of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. During his tenure as director of the ASU herbarium, he increased the number of specimens from 13,000 to nearly 30,000.
