Biography
Italian botanist and curator at the Central Italian Herbarium (Florence), Renato Pampanini was born in Valdobbiadene, Treviso, but studied in Switzerland. Attending a variety of Swiss academic institutions in Freiburg, Lausanne and Geneva, he qualified as a botanist under Robert Chodat with a work on phytogeography. Returning to Italy he became a curator in the botanical museum and herbarium in Florence and remained there until 1933. Pampanini was also interested in the history of botany, ancient collections and even archaeology and published on this topic as well. Later to be named botany lecturer in Cagliari, Sardinia, he edited the Nuovo Giornale Botanico Italiano and also contributed as an active member in the Italian Botanical Society.
Pampanini's research focused on the flora of Cadore, a region which he explored extensively, producing a series of publications including La Flora del Cadore in 1958. Outside of Italy he was also particularly interested in the flora of Libya and visited the country three times. The first of which occurred in 1913 and was to Tripolitania, while the latter expeditions were commissioned by the Ministry for the Colonies and were intended for the study of the local agriculture. These he undertook with R.E.G. Pichi Sermolli in 1933 and 1934 and in 1930 he published a Repertorium Florae Libicae. The personal herbarium of Renato Pampanini is housed in the herbarium Central Italian Herbarium (FI) and contains some 5,566 specimens.
