Biography
United States botanist. Born in Kirksville, Missouri, Gerald Bruce Ownbey received his BA and MA from the University of Wyoming in 1939 and 1940 respectively. He went on to complete a PhD at Washington University, St Louis, Missouri, in 1947, and immediately joined the faculty in the University of Minnesota's Department of Botany, where he rose to full professor in 1956 and served two terms as chair of the department (1960-1962). Considered an expert on plant taxonomy and the flora of Minnesota, Dr Ownbey was curator of the MINN herbarium from 1947 until his retirement in 1986. In 1991 he published The Vascular Plants of Minnesota: a Checklist and Atlas (1991) with his long-time colleague Thomas Morley. The focus of his collections in Mexico and Guatemala were the genera Argemone and Cirsium.
