Biography
American botanist, Nathaniel Lord Britton Curator of Botany at New York Botanical Garden. Mori's expertise is in the systematics and ecology of neotropical Lecythidaceae (the Brazil nut family) and in Amazonian and Guianan floristics. Scott A. Mori was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, where he developed an interest in natural history and the outdoors through the Boy Scouts and hunting rabbits and pheasants in the local countryside. He studied biology and conservation at the University of Wisconsin and after graduating embarked on a three-month collecting trip to Mexico in 1965, which would be followed by annual journeys to countries in Central and South America for the next 40 years. After Mexico, Mori went to Costa Rica to study tropical grasses and returned with a souvenir of 'monkey pots', fruit casings from a tree in the brazil nut family. The New York Botanic Garden (NYBG) botanist J.J. Wurdack had informed Mori's professor, Dr H. Iltis, that several trees in the family were in need of revision, and when Mori found out, his path was decided. He received his PhD in botany in 1974, from Wisconsin, writing his dissertation on the Lecythidaceae genus Gustavia.

Mori worked from 1969 to 1974 as an instructor at Wisconsin (Marshfield) and spent the following year as a curator at the Summit Herbarium in Panama, at the same time collecting plants for the Missouri Botanical Garden. He went on to take up a research assistant post at the New York Botanic Garden in 1975, where he remains to the present day (he served as Director of the Garden's Institute of Systematic Botany from 1995-2000). The Cocoa Research Centre in Bahia, Brazil, lured him away for an interlude of three years (1978-1980), during which time he carried out botanical explorations and managed the centre's herbarium. Mori was heavily involved in the Flora Neotropica throughout the 1980s, as associate editor (1980-1983), co-editor (1984-1992) and executive director of the Organization for Flora Neotropica (1988-1993), during which time he was also chair of the Scientific Publications Committee at NYBG. He is co-editor of the Flowering Plants of the Neotropics published by Princeton University Press and an adjunct professor at three universities (CUNY, Columbia and Yale).

With Iain Prance, Mori completed a monograph of Lecythidaceae for Flora Neotropica and has published studies of many species of the family found in central French Guiana and Amazonian regions, especially looking at the co-evolution of the plants and their pollinators and seed dispersers such as bats. He has also prepared a vascular plant flora for a biological reserve in French Guiana, and is above all dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests. Mori often works with his wife, Carol A. Gracie, with whom he is preparing an electronic flora of flowering plants on the Antilles island of Saba. He is also collaborating with Reinaldo Aguilar and Xavier Cornejo on an e-flora of the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. Mori is a member of several American and international botanical societies and served as the president of the Torrey Botanical Society from 1999-2001. Awards he has received include the Engler Medal in Silver from the IAPT (2002), the David Fairchild medal for tropical plant exploration and the Asa Gray Award from the ASPT (both in 2007). He has collected nearly 30,000 numbers, mostly from the neotropics and with a focus on lianas and trees.
