Biography
United States botanist from Oneida, New York State who studied at Syracuse University (1894-1898) and Columbia University. A pteridologist and one of the formeost specialists of his generation. In 1899 he was appointed to a position in the United States National Museum, Division of Plants. He was promoted to assistant curator (1905), associate curator (1914) and second curator (1937) until his retirement in 1946. He made nine major tropical American expeditions (1903-1926) until a heart attack in 1931 put an end to further strenuous overseas fieldwork. His publications include a series of papers under the title 'Studies of Tropical American Ferns', published in the journal Contributions From the United States National Herbarium. He was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of science from Syracuse University (1922). Maxon was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was a founder member and elected president of the Biologists' Field Club of Washington and was president of the American Fern Society (1898-1899, 1919-1933).
