Biography
German botanist Friedrich Markgraf was an authority on the flora of Albania.
After obtaining his doctorate from Berlin in 1922, Markgraf served on the staff of the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Museum until 1943, serving as Professor of Botany from 1934. He then spent two years at Müncheberg and in 1947-1957 at the Botanical Garden in Munich. He also served as chair of the German Botanical Society. After a year in Ankara, Turkey, he took up his final position as professor of botany and director of the botanical garden in Zurich, where he remained form 1958-1967.
Markgraf conducted several collecting expeditions to Albania. He published the works Pflanzen aus Albanien and Pflanzengeograhie von Albanien in 1931 and 1932, respectively.
A festschrift for Markgraf was published in 1967 in the Botanische Jahrbücher für Systematik, Pflanzengeschichte und Pflanzengeographie (vol. 86).
