Biography
French botanist. Mandon initially undertook theological training before working as a private tutor and secretary in Paris, where he developed an interest in botany. He emigrated to Bolivia during the revolution of 1848, and was employed at a mine in Tipuani. Over the next decade he collected 1,800 plant specimens in the province of Larecaja and is remembered in the names of many Bolivian species. One of the most spectacular is the purple-flowered shrub, Taras mandonii (Baker f.) Kearney (Malvaceae), found at an altitude of around 3,000m in the Purani Churiquimbaya valley. After his return to France in 1861, he prepared his collection, much of which went to Paris. In the year before his death he also collected in Madeira.
