Biography
Swedish botanist from Stora Malm in Södermanland, originally given the name Gustaf Oskar Andersson, the son of a crofter. He studied at Uppsala University and changed his surname to Malme in 1891. He was recipient of a Regnell travel grant for an expedition to Brazil and Paraguay (1892-1894) with C.A.M. Lindman. On his return, Malme was employed at the Natural History Museum in Stockholm as Regnellian Amanuensis (1895-1901). His second expedition was to Brazil and Argentina (1901-1903) after which he was given a temporary position as Curator of Botany (1904-1905). Malme left the Museum to become a lecturer in biology and chemistry at Norrmalm in Stockholm (1905-1911) and subsequently a lecturer in zoology and biology at a teacher training college in Stockholm (1911-1930). After retirement from education he joined the Stockholm Museum again as Regnellian Amanuensis (1930-1937). Herbarium collections were mainly made under the name Malme but some European specimens bear his earlier name. A number of genera were named in honour of Malme including the phanerogams Malmea R.E. Fries in the Annonaceae and Malmeanthus R.M. King & H. Rob. in the Asteraceae; his mycological achievements are commemorated by both fungal and lichen genera.
