Biography
American surgeon and botanist specialising in orchids. Luer is a world expert on pleurothallid orchids, having made numerous expeditions to Central and South America with his wife, Jane Luer, to collect specimens. He makes his own drawings of the orchids and has been publishing volumes of Icones Pleurothallidinarum, a monograph of the group, since 1987. Born in Alton, Illinois, Luer became a doctor of medicine in 1946 (Washington University, St. Louis) and practiced surgery for nearly 30 years in Sarasota, Florida. Retiring from this vocation in 1975, he took up research work at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, where he has been Senior Curator since 1999. He has described more than 1,500 new species and 12 new genera and has authored two books on orchids, The Native Orchids of Florida and The Native Orchids of the United States and Canada. The numerous memberships and awards conferred on him include Fellow of the Linnean Society of London and the Gold Medal award from the American Orchid Society. Luer collects not only orchids but also items from stamps to porcelain. He and his wife have five children.
