Biography
French doctor and naturalist from Châlons-sur-Marne who sailed with T.N. Baudin (1801-1803) to Australia on Le Géographe and Le Naturaliste. Publication of descriptions from the material of the expedition was greatly delayed, partly because the commanders and several of the scientists of the expedition did not survive the journey and Leschenault was left sick at Timor in June 1803. He was probably the first scientist to observe the Aboriginal people of south-west Australia, but his findings were never fully published. His herbarium at P was used by later botanists, including A.J.A. Bonpland, R.L. Desfontaines, A.L. de Jussieu, J.H.H. de Labillardière and L. Ventenat. The genus Lechenaultia R. Br., endemic to Western Australia and complete with Robert Brown's original misspelling, was named in his honour.
