Biography
French merchant, judge at the commercial court in Cherbourg and botanist who is perhaps best known for his work on algae. He was one of the founding members of Société Nationale des Sciences Naturelles et Mathématiques de Cherbourg on 17 August 1852 and, in addition to F.M.L. Corbière, created the most important of the founding collections of CHE. Brummitt and Powell (1992) erroneously cite his surname both as 'Jolis' and 'Le Jolis' and give two contradictory standard abbreviations as 'Jolis' and 'Le Jol.' The latter is chosen here as it is the preferred form used by cryptogamists and the former is treated as a synonym. Material attributed to him from outside Europe was probably collected by others and incorporated into his private herbarium. He is commemorated by the algal genus Lejolisia Bornet (Rhodophyceae, Ceramiaceae).
