Biography
German physician and naturalist, emplyed by the University of Göttingen, who sailed with Estonian Admiral A.J. Krusentern on the first Russian circumnavigation of the world (1803-1806), under the patronage of Czar Alexander I. The expedition explored the Pacific, including California and made a diplomatic mission to Japan; some algal material from the latter part of the expedition is at BM. The genus Langsdorffia Mart. in the Balanophoraceae was named in his honour.
