Biography
Scottish physician and botanist who was professor of chemistry and botany at the Universidad Central in Quito, Ecuador (1826-1873). His first set is mainly at K but more than 3,000 specimens are known to exist at BM, including material of phanerogams and possibly original cryptogams, mainly purchased between 1846 and 1869 from his collections made in Colombia and Ecuador. Material of the exsiccatae set Herbarium Edinense, dated 1819, is also present.
