Biography
German botanist. Hieronymous specialised in ferns and algae, editing the journal Hedwigia for 28 years. Born in Schöneiche, in the historical south-west German province of Silesia, Georg Hieronymous first studied medicine and sciences in Zürich and Bern (1868-1870) before turning his sights on botany and in 1872 gained his doctorate from the University of Halle. The following year, Hieronymous became assistant to P.G. Lorentz (1835-1881) in Cordoba, Argentina, and Professor of Botany at Cordoba in 1874, in which role he continued until 1883. During his time in Argentina he accompanied Lorentz in investigating the flora of many parts of not only Argntina but also Bolivia, Brazil and Uruguay. He returned to Germany in 1883, devoting himself to private botanical study in Breslau until 1892. In these years Hieronymus specialised in the algae of the region and contributed to Engler and Prantl's work on plant families. In 1892 he was offered the curatorship of the Botanic Garden Museum in Berlin, which he accepted and where he remained until shortly before his death. His chief undertaking was to organise the museum's extensive collection of ferns and fern allies.
