Biography
German botanist from Dresden who lived most of his life in Greece (1843-1849, 1851-1902) where he became Director of the botanical gardens in Athens (1851-1902). He specialised in the Greek flora and produced many named exsiccatae series. The genus Heldreichia Boiss. and numerous species are named in his honour. His herbarium at B was largely destroyed during the Second World War but, thanks to his creation of exsiccatae, a great many isotypes are extant including material at BM. The types of many taxa based on his collections and described by Boissier are at G-BOIS.
