Biography
Born in Switzerland of a Scottish family originally from Glasgow, Charles Forsyth-Major initially trained in medicine in Switzerland. He is best known as a vertebrate palaeontologist and zoologist and corresponded with Charles Darwin during his work on the Descent of Man. Forsyth-Major made botanical collections during some 16 years of study in Corsica and undertook a zoological expedition to Madagascar (1894-1896) for the British Museum (Natural History). His plant collections mainly comprise specimens from the Mediterranean region and Madagascar with original material of the latter at BM. Forsyth-Major is commemorated by Mimulopsis forsythii S. Moore.
