Biography
Danish apothecary from Aabenraa (Apenrade) in northern Schleswig-Holstein, which was then part of Germany (1864-1795). He travelled to the Cape of Good Hope (1823) where he first became interested in botany. He returned to Germany in 1828 with a large collection of material, which was mostly distributed to German and Danish botanists, and he worked on the material at Hamburg. Ecklon eventually returned to South Africa (1838) where he collected until the year of his death in Cape Town. Material was bequeathed to BM with the herbarium of N.B. Ward (1869) and further specimens purchased with the herbaria of R.J. Shuttleworth (1877) and G.E.L. Hampe (1881).
