Biography
French school inspector and botanist born Joseph Duval, he adopted the name Duval-Jouve after his marriage in 1843. He specialised in Poaceae, other monocotyledons and the pteridophyte genus Equisetum. An outspoken Darwinian, he lost his prestigious position because of his liberal views. He moved frequently with his job and was based variously in Algeria, Strasbourg and Montpellier. With each move he gave away part of his herbarium, the residue being finally donated to the Faculté de Sciences de Montpellier (MPU) by his family in 1883. The herbarium is maintained as a separate entity (MPU-Duval) with duplicates in the general herbarium at MPU and at P.
