Biography
Mark Coode, an authority on Elaeocarpaceae, retired from his post as Principal Scientific Officer in the Kew Herbarium in September 1998. Coode undertook extensive fieldwork in SE Asia, a region where he gained responsibility for directing work and raising funds.
Coode attended Cambridge University (BA 1961) before joining the University of Edinburgh, where he assisted Dr. P.H. Davis with the first two volumes of his flora of Turkey. In 1966 he was appointed Senior Botanist at the Botany Division of the Forestry Department in Lae, New Guinea. Here he worked on Melanesian Terminalia and authored a foresters' manual of Combretaceae, as well as collecting in various parts of New Guinea, New Ireland and Papua. He was appointed to the herbarium at Kew in 1975 and in 1977 became editor of Kew Bulletin, a role he held until 1990. He now lives near Monmouth on the Welsh border.
