Biography
French botanist from Domfront, Orne who gained a doctorate from the University of Lille (1901). He was a leader of French applied tropical botany and worked in Africa as a young man. Chevalier established the botanic garden at Dalaba, Guinea (1905). He collected in Indochina (1913-1919) and was appointed General Inspector of Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam (1919). He was later appointed professor at Paris (1929) and director of Agriculture at the Colonial Laboratory in Paris. He is commemorated by many names including the genera Chevalierella A. Camus in the Poaceae, Chevalieria Guadich. in the Bromeliaceae, Chevalierodendron Leroy in the Moraceae, Neochevaliera A. Chev. & Beille in the Euphorbiaceae and Neochevalierodendron J. Léonard in the Fabaceae.
