Biography
Botanist, born in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, who was widely regarded in her time as South Africa's top authority on the Eastern Cape flora. A distinguished graduate of the botany department of Rhodes University soon after its founding in 1904, she worked for several years as a schoolteacher before visiting England to continue her botanical studies at the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and London. Returning to Rhodes University in 1918 to begin an academic career, she concentrated her research on a study of the genus Streptocarpus until her retirement as senior lecturer in 1941. She was a co-founder of the Nature Reserve Society, formed in 1932 to preserve the flora of Mountain Drive in Grahamstown, which is now under the protection of the Department of Agriculture. She is commemorated by Delosperma britteniae L. Bolus and Faucaria britteniae L. Bolus in the Aizoaceae.
