Biography
British banker and botanist from Nottingham who spent most of his professional career in South Africa where he collected extensively. A prominent orchidologist, Harry Bolus produced Orchids of the Cape Peninsula (1888) followed by the lavishly illustrated, three-volume Icones Orchidearum Austro-Africanorum Extratropicarum (1893-1896, 1911, 1913). He founded the Chair of Botany at the South African College, later the University of Cape Town (1918), and the University herbarium which was subsequently named the Bolus Herbarium. Genera named in his honour include Bolusia Benth., Bolusanthus Harms. and Neobolusia Schltr..
