Biography
South African botanist from Burgersdorp, Eastern Cape and educated at the South African College in Cape Town (1899-1902). In 1903 her grand-uncle Harry Bolus appointed her to curate his collection and assist him with research on orchids and ericas. She stayed on as director when the herbarium was bequeathed to Cape Town University (1911) and committed her long career to its development as a taxonomic research institution. In 1912 she married Frank Bolus, the youngest son of Harry Bolus. To popularise botany and promote wider interest in the cultivation and preservation of Cape Flora, she wrote regularly for South African Gardening and authored A Book of South African Flowers for general readership. Her published research focused on the Iridaceae and the Mesembryanthemaceae. She was awarded an honorary DSc by Stellenbosch University (1942) and is commemorated by Bolusanthemum Schwantes (= Hereroa (Schwantes) Dinter & Schwantes) in the Aizoaceae and Geissorhiza louisabolusiae R.C. Foster in the Iridaceae.
