Biography
British botanist from Brighton who trained at the University of London. Herbert Baker was employed as a research chemist and plant physiologist by the Hosa (Cancer) Research Laboratories, London (1940-1945). He joined the University of Leeds as a lecturer and researcher (1945-1954) before moving to Africa where he was senior lecturer and subsequently professor at University College, Ghana (1954-1957). Baker emigrated to the United States (1957) and joined the Department of Botany of the University of California, Berkeley, later the Department of Integrative Biology. He was appointed associate professor (1957-1960), professor of Integrative Biology (1960), director (1957-1969) and latterly associate director (1969-1974). He retired in 1990.
