Biography
French naturalist who initially studied pharmacy before working as publisher and printer. He later settled with his family in Constantinople (1830-1838) where he was a professional collector and explorer of the Orient. Paul Aucher-Éloy collected extensively in Turkey, Egypt and as far as the Arabian peninsula and Iran, reaching places no other European botanist had collected. He died at Isfahan on his last expedition from 'an excess of zeal for natural sciences'. The genus Auchera DC. in the Asteraceae and a great many species including Iris aucheri (Baker) Sealy, Linaria aucheri Boiss. and Tulipa aucheriana Baker were named in his honour. Approxiimately 2,000 specimens are at BM, mostly purchased (1841) and further material purchased with the Shuttleworth herbarium (1877).
