Biography
Scottish botanist from Glasgow who originally trained in law at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen but gave up that career to study plants. George Arnott worked as an assistant to W.J. Hooker at Glasgow (1830-1840), describing the plants of Beechey's voyage and latterly standing in for him when Hooker took up a position as Director of Kew. Arnott was later appointed Regius Professor of Botany at Glasgow (1845-1868). The genus Arnottia A. Rich. was named in his honour. His herbarium and library was acquired by GL but the phanerogams were later transferred to Edinburgh (E-GL) on permanent loan.
