Biography
Swedish botanist from Gärdserum, Småland, who collected during the circumnavigation of the Eugénie (1851-1853). During the voyage he collected in Africa including specimens from the vicinity of Cape Town and Stellenbosch (1853). After his return to Sweden he became a lecturer in botany at Lund University (1855). He was subsequently appointed professor of botany and director (1856-1879) of the botanical department at the Natural History Museum in Stockholm and of the Hortus Bergianus. Andersson specialised in the genus Salix and collected with A.E. Nordenskiöld in the Arctic (1871-1872). The genus Anderssoniopiper Trel. in the Piperaceae was named after him.
