Biography
Scottish physician and botanist who joined the Bengal Medical Service (1854) and later became Superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Garden (1861-1869) and the first Conservator of Forests in Bengal (1864-1869). He published on the flora of Aden (Yemen) and specialised in the family Acanthaceae. Anderson was responsible for the successful cultivation of Cinchona in India. He contracted a liver infection while working on the project, was forced to retire early because of poor health and died the following year aged just 38. Strobilanthes andersonii Bedd. in the Acanthaceae and Globba andersonii C.B. Clarke ex Baker in the Zingiberaceae were named in his honour.
