Biography
Cuban agronomist Julián Acuña Galé researched his local flora and introduced Kenaf (a fibre producing species) into cultivation in Cuba, as well as several other useful crop varieties. He also contributed to Cuban agronomy by managing a programme to research and combat the virus 'Raya Blanca' which threatens rice crops. Although always interested in the economic side of botany, he also collected in the field and studied the taxonomy of many native plant groups. Acuña, Juan T. Roig and Hermano León were at the forefront of botanical research in Mexico during their lifetimes and collected together, Acuña amassing a considerable herbarium. Particularly interested in the Orchidaceae, he created a descriptive catalogue for this family in 1983 and also published a book on the mellipherous plants of Cuba (1970) and undesirable plants in Cuban crops (1974). The orchid species Lepanthes acunae Hespenheide was named after him as the collector of the type material.
