Names
Gladiolus flavoviridis Goldblatt [family IRIDACEAE], sp. nov. Planate 55–85 cm altae, foliis 6, inferioribus duobus basalibus longissimis laminibus sublinearibus marginibus costisque leviter incrassatis, foliis superioribus brevioribus, spicis 10–18-floris, floribus flavis vel flavo-viridibus, tepalis inaequalibus, superioribus grandioribus 15–17 mm longis, filamentis c. 10 mm longis 6 mm exsertis, antheris 5.5 mm longis. Typus: Zimbabwe, Mutare, north of Christmas Pass (Buru’s grounds), 15.ii.1949, Chase 1364 (SRGH, holotype; BM; K).
Information
Plants 55–85 cm high. Corms unknown. Foliage leaves 6, the lower 2 usually more or less basal and larger than the others, reaching to the base or middle of the spike, 4–5 mm wide, nearly linear, the midrib and margins slightly thickened; upper leaves cauline and progressively shorter above, the uppermost usually entirely sheathing. Stem simple or with a short branch. Spike 10–18-flowered, inclined from the base; bracts evidently membranous below and dry and brown above at anthesis, 12–16 mm long, the inner about two-thirds as long as the outer. Flowers pale-yellow or greenish, tepal markings if present unknown; perianth tube c. 10 mm long, obliquely infundibuliform, widening and curving outwards near the apex, c. 10 mm long; tepals unequal, the upper three 15–17 mm long, (often less when dry), larger than the others, broadly lanceolate, the uppermost inclined over the stamens, c. 12 mm wide, the lower 3 tepals united below for c. 2 mm, 9–10 mm long, abruptly expanded in the upper half, the apices inclined toward the ground. Filaments c. 10 mm long, exserted 6 mm; anthers c. 5.5 mm long. Style arching over the filaments, dividing between the base and middle of the anthers; style branches 2–3 mm long, never reaching the anther apices. Capsules c. 10 mm long, obovoid.
Habitat
In deciduous woodland or open grassland.
Range
Apparently restricted to the Mutare area of eastern Zimbabwe, and probably also in adjacent Mozambique
Distribution
Zimbabwe E Mutare, ridge south of the Customs Border Station, 20.ii.1958, Chase 6821 (K; SRGH).
Notes
Flowering in January to early March. This species is distinguished by the relatively small, pale-yellow or greenish flowers on a ± deflexed secund spike and bracts which by anthesis are dry and rust-coloured above.
