Notes
Engler, Schumann (loc. cit.) and others have considered this plant to be a variety of H. modesta but in my opinion the differences of leaf-shape, petiole-length, seed-colour and testa-pattern render such a concept untenable. Within H. kirkii itself there is considerable variation. The Lupata syntype of H. kirkii represents one form with smaller leaves, a more branching habit, petals scarcely exceeding the calyx and a more ovoid capsule. The syntypes of H. lugardii represent the other forms with larger leaves, less branching habit, petals much exceeding the calyx and a more elongate capsule. There are, however, plenty of intermediates and no geographical segregation of the two forms.
