Information
Tree up to 10 m. tall, or a shrub. Leafy twigs dark-brown to blackish when dry. Leaf lamina 7.5–15 x 3–7 cm., subcoriaceous; apex shortly acuminate; base cuneate to rounded or subcordate; lateral veins 8–12(14) pairs; petiole 1.5–4 (5.5) cm. long, 1–1.5 mm. thick when dry. Peduncle basal bracts subpersistent. Receptacle ellipsoid to subglobose, 2–2.5 cm. in diam. when fresh, (1)1.2–1.8 cm. in diam. when dry, yellow with paler spots at maturity.

In medium altitude rainforest, dry forest or rocky slopes and in transition woodland below evergreen forest

This subspecies differs from the other subspecies in having ± persistant basal bracts on the peduncle, and leafy twigs drying dark brown instead of pale brown.The other subspecies and their ranges of distribution are as follows; subsp. ottoniifolia ranges from Uganda to Sierra Leone (or Senegal?), subsp. multinervia C.C. Berg from Sierra Leone to Ivory Coast, and subsp. lucanda (Ficalho) C.C. Berg from NW. Tanzania through Zaire to Angola and Gabon.
