On Kalahari Sand, quartzitic and granitic soils, heavy black clays and alluvium, on rocky hillsides and granite outcrops, riverbanks and watercourses, in sandveld, grassland, mixed treed savanna, deciduous thicket, miombo and mopane woodlands, riverine vegetation and in periodically inundated ground

Vernacular names as recorded in specimen data include: “duondi”, “m’tondi” (Ayaua); “manyambane” (chiShona); “mfura” (Tete area); “mtantanyara”, “tantanyerere” (chiNyanja); “m’tundi” (Zomba area); “munonyamanzi” (Tok.); “namazamaza” (Cabo Delgado area).Whereas the K and SRGH duplicates of Phipps 993 (male fl. 1.iii.1958, 65 km north of Mauora, Zimbabwe) are referable to this forma, the LISC duplicate is referable to f. fischeri.Likewise the K and NY duplicates of Brass 17408 (fr. 24.viii.1946 at Kasungu, Malawi) are of f. niedenzui, whilst the BM duplicate is of f. fischeri.The K duplicate of Brummitt 9295 (male and female fl. 22.iii.1970 at the Dzalanyama For. Res.) is f. niedenzui, but the PRE duplicate is intermediate between the 2 formae.
