Notes
This species has long been confused with B. longispicata Schinz. B. henriquesii is generally a much smaller plant, rarely exceeding 20 cm. in height with very many short stems arising from a thickened woody base. The inflorescences in both species are spicate in the young stage with flowers crowded together at the apex. With maturity and towards fruiting those of B. henriquesii elongate to c. 10 cm. in length, while those of B. longispicata extend to at least 20 cm. or more long. The two species can be further and more clearly distinguished by the indumentum on the calyces. In B. henriquesii it is usually of fine to coarse pinkish to of f-white short hairs which are either spreading or forwardly directed, while in B. longispicata it is of much denser, longer white hairs which are appressed and directed backwards. The indumentum on the corolla tube is quite clearly defined too, with the hairs on B. longispicata being totally appressed-retrorse, while in the other those above on the tube are clearly antrorse. For the purpose of Flora Zambesiaca, I prefer to keep these two species separate.
