Information
Shrub up to 6 m. tall. Stems slender, usually with stiff branches. Leafy twigs 1–5 mm. thick, puberulous to hirsute. Leaves ± distinctly distichous and alternate or subopposite to subverticillate; lamina subovate to oblong or lanceolate, sometimes elliptic, 2–15 x 1–5.5 cm., symmetrical, chartaceous, apex acute, obtuse or rounded, 3-lobed or 3-dentate, base rounded to obtuse or cuneate, margin subentire or ± faintly crenate; both surfaces scabrous; lateral veins 5–12 pairs; petiole 2–10(25) mm. long; stipules 5–10 mm. long, partly puberulous, mostly subpersistent. Figs solitary or in pairs in the leaf axils; peduncle 5–15 mm. long with 3 small bracts scattered or whorled; receptacle stipitate, without bracts on the outer surface, 1.5–3 cm. in diam. when fresh, globose, often pyriform and 1–2.5 cm. in diam. when dry, hispidulous, green to pale yellow at maturity, stipe up to c. 5 mm. long.
Habitat
Locally common on banks and floodplains of low altitude rivers, on sandbanks and swampy places, usually forming dense thickets

From Senegal to the Somali Republic and southwards to northern Namibia and to Natal in South Africa.
