Small to medium–sized evergreen tree. Leaves with inconspicuous, caducous stipules, moderately coriaceous in texture; lamina glabrous; lateral nerves conspicuous, rather widely spaced and curving towards leaf–apex, tertiary vein reticulation regular, fine and distinct. Flowers pedicellate, fascicled in leaf axils. Calyx 5–merous, the lobes almost free, strongly imbricate. Corolla with 5 lobes, each with 1 median and 2 lateral segments. Stamens inserted at level of base of corolla lobes; anthers included, extrorse. Staminodes present, entire, petaloid. Ovary conical, pubescent, tapering into the short cylindrical style. Fruit a large 1–seeded berry. Seed compressed oblong–ellipsoid, with oblong lateral scar; endosperm absent, cotyledons fleshy.
