Information
An erect somewhat soft annual herb, to c. 1 m. tall. Stems simple below, branched above, faintly ribbed, oppressed puberulous; hairs short-stalked T-shaped. Leaves membranous, sessile or shortly petiolate, up to c. 16 x 6.5 cm., elliptic, tapering to an acuminate apex and a cuneate base, serrate crenate or subentire; upper surface with scattered small flagelliform hairs, lower surface sparsely thinly puberulous with short-stalked T-shaped hairs. Capitula few to many, ± laxly corymbiform cymose on the branches. Involucre up to c. 15 mm. long, campanulate, exceeding the pappus. Phyllaries many, stiff chartaceous, gently tapering to a pungent apex, ± narrowly membranous on the margins, hispidulous outside; outer phyllaries short, subulate-lanceolate, ± spreading, hispid; inner phyllaries to c. 15 mm. long, narrowly lanceolate, aristate. Corollas white or purplish, c. 8 mm. long, tubular but slightly wider towards the apex, pubescent and glandular except near the base of the tube; lobes linear, 1.5 mm. long. Achenes 3–4 mm. long, narrowly obovoid-cylindric, narrowly sharply 6-ribbed, strigose; outer pappus of short barbellate lanceolate-acuminate scales, inner of± caducous white barbellate setae 6–8 mm. long.
