Subsp. vollesenii Verdc. occurs in southern Tanzania, and differs in the following respects: sometimes spiny; peduncles c. 3 mm long; calyx tube glabrous; lobes 3–6(7) mm long. Subsp. chartacea (Robyns) Verdc., distinguished by the longer peduncles, up to 8 mm long, and glabrous calyx tubes, occurs in South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal). It may well be present in Mozambique M: but no certain record has yet been found. An illustration can be found in Pooley, Trees of Natal, Zululand & Transkei: 470 (1993). Subsp. acuminata Verdc. occurs further north in coastal Tanzania and Kenya. The leaf blades are very acuminate and the peduncles are up to 15 mm long.
