Information
Petals broadly elliptic, ratio of length to breadth 1: 0.43–0.81. Fruit with a very rough pericarp.
Habitat
The ecology and habit of this subspecies are similar to those of subsp. juncea.

It is readily distinguished in fruit, but in flower only the petals offer a diagnostic feature of any value and even here there is an overlap. The areas of distribution of the two can be divided by a line running through the more northerly part of SE. Bechuanaland, the Southern Division of S. Rhodesia and the Sul do Save Province of Mozambique with subsp. juncea to the north and subsp. crustata to the south.
